Dealing with Industry “Trolls” By Jacky Grassman 16 May 2018 Ever   noticed   your   Facebook   Page   being   viewed   numerous   times   daily,   strange   events   leading   up   to   drawn   conclussions of   being   spied   on?      I   believe   that   all   companies   experience   these   “trolls”   at   least   once   in   their   years   of   existance,   and   if   so you would have experienced understandable feelings of frustration, anger, revenge and retribution. The   Internet   explains   “Trolling”   as   someone   who   “sows   discord   on   the   Internet   by   starting   quarrels   or   upsetting   people,   by posting   inflammatory,   extraneous,   or   off-topic   messages   in   an   online   community   (such   as   a   newsgroup,   forum,   chat   room, or   blog)   with   the   intent   of   provoking   readers   into   an   emotional   response,   or   of   otherwise   disrupting   normal,   on-topic discussion, often for the troll's amusement.  I   would   like   to   add   my   own   extension   to   the   meaning   of   this   word,   as   companies   who   are   so   hard-up   for   clients   or completely   too   inept   or   incompetent   in   their   field   to   source   their   own   business,   that   they   “troll”   industry   affiliates   via   their websites and/or social media pages.  What   gives   you   the   idea   that   we   have   experienced   such   trolling   in   the   not   so   distant   passed,   if   not   present   and   ongoing.     Although   this   is   as   frustrating   as   dealing   with   an incompetent   and   incolent   employee,   there   is   not   much   one   can   do   to   these   lowly   “trolls”.      How   do   you   know   when   you   are   being   trolled…?      In   our   industry,   as   my   Mom used to say QED - Quite Easily Done,   that   being   said,   I   knew   where   to   start   searching,   and   that   is   how   I   picked   up   on   my   tell-tale   “jargon”   being   used   in   copied   works,   service   and   product   add-ons   being implemented   the   more   Marketing   based   my   website   and   Facebook   page   was   getting. At   this   point   my   first   thought   was   shut   them   down,   shut   down   the   website,   shut   down the   Facebook   Page…..   and   then   came   the   …….   anger   of   “how   dare   they”,   what   type   of   person   would   do   something   like   this….   and   then   came   the   acceptance   of “Duplicated,   never   Replicated”.      But   along   with   these   thoughts   also   came   comments   from   friends   in   the   industry,   “Pat   yourself   on   the   back   and   feel   flattered….obviously you are doing something right”. Therefore this article, maybe it could help another company who is going through the same situation…….”Don’t get mad….. get even”…..   Being   in   the   design   and   online   marketing   industry,   as   we   are,   our   “products”   are   “freely”   available   to   anyone   who   is   confident   enough   to   use   the   right   click   button   on   their mouse.   Our   ideas   and   hard   work   is   stolen   daily   through   downloading,   screenshots   and   copying;   used   as   inspiration   (which   is   quite   a   feather   in   our   caps),   and   simply blatantly   copied   and   pasted   into   their   “theme   based   -   designs”…..   and   sold   as   original   works.      Being   able   to   compose   a   Company   Profile   from   scratcn,   does   not   come easy,   and   certainly   does   not   sit   well   in   any   wannabe   “designers”   creative   mind   and   is   only   perfected   after   many   years   of   practice   and   experience,   especially   when   you   are writing at least 3 per day over different industries. Being   in   such   a   situation   has   made   me   take   the   day   “off”……   ha-ha,   as   if   graphic   and   web   designers   ever   get   excited   about   “the   weekend”……   and   reflect   on   where   my business   is   going   and   why   I   started   the   company   in   the   first   place,   but   especially   my   vision   for   the   copany,   and   I   was   pleasantly   surprised   to   realise   that   my   goals   are   still as they were so many years ago; to offer the best quality designs, development, service and products to my clients and potential loyal clients. If   youre   office   hours   are   9   -   4,   you   are   in   the   wrong   industry!!!!      Design   company   clients   are   strewn   over   thousand   of   industries   of   which   most   do   not   run   simple   “office hours”.      If   you   have   never   sat   at   4’am   wondering   why   your   design   is   starting   to   look   like   a   3D   image   instead   of   a   simple   one   dimension   vector,   simply   to   shrug   it   off   as   just not   enough   coffee….   you   have   never   strived   to   reach   customer   excellence   and   personal   satisfaction.     All   this   being   said,   it   should   be   quite   obvious   why   us   designers   get troll-stomping-mad when our work and designs are violated.  All   these   “trolls”   have   accomplished,   is   that   I   have   taken   the   game   face   out   of   the   bottom   drawer   and   doned   it   for   battle,   they   have   set   the   focus   of   our   company   back   on Marketing   ourselves   as   we   would   market   our   biggest   clients,   they   have   changed   our   focus   from   fun   loving,   easily-sharing   open-faced   partners,   to,   no   prisoners   taken,   no holds barred, uncompromising business-focused competitors who will not be taken down. Simply   said…..   we   not   a   design   company   who   chooses   their   design   themes   from   a   comfortable   list   of   “ready-made”   templates   from   an   easily   downloadable   program   that changes   any   wannabe   into   a   perceived   designer,   we   are   custom   based,   customer   based,   customer   satisfaction   based   and   we   will   never   compromise   on   quality   or efficiency. So   designer   friends   and   partners……   use   your   copyrights,   add   watermarks   and   take   your   attorney   for   coffee,   you   never   know   when   the   trolls   might   start   a   party   and include you in their “on the hour hugging rituals”.
